California School-Based Sealant Program Communities of Practice (CA SBSP CoP)

The California Department of Public Health, Office of Oral Health and the University of California San Francisco have launched a new workgroup, Communities of Practice (CoP) around the Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) community.

The purpose of the CoP is to create a learning community where members learn, share and work together on a common problem or issue within their community.  Through collaborative learning, members can exchange ideas, collaborate with one another, share best practices, and lessons learned.

CDC states dental sealants are effective protection for children in preventing cavities, however, school-based sealant programs are underused.  To increase the utilization of dental sealants for children, we are exploring the barriers with the school-based sealant programs, through the CoP.   We have invited the RDHAP community to join the conversation and share their knowledge to learn from each other and explore new ideas on how to increase sealant utilization for school children.

Workgroups

The CA SBSP CoP RDHAP workgroup convenes every other month to discuss topics around school-based programs on identifying best practices and approaches to create a sustainable program utilizing the RDHAP workforce.

The current focus areas for the workgroups are:

  1. Rate of participation
  2. Billing for services
  3. Cooperation from schools and parents
  4. Quality of service on sealants provided
  5. Equipment
  6. Using Tele-dentistry to refer children and linked them to a source of care
  7. Efficiency, scheduling schools and children
  8. Equity and Reach, how we can reach the children who need these interventions
