Oral Health, COVID-19 and HIV

Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • KNOWLEDGE: Identify key COVID-19 concerns for patients with HIV and their healthcare teams
  • APPLICATION: Describe safe visit plans for routine, urgent, and emergency dental visits
  • SYNTHESIS: Summarize approaches that patients and dental teams can implement to support continued access to services  

Description: This two hour workshop will provide an interprofessional update on HIV oral health issues and the role of medical, dental and case managers and others in assuring access to safe oral healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic. The session will include HIV and oral health overviews; safe dental visit procedures for emergency, urgent, and routine care; discussions on successful tele-dentistry practice, and best practices for dental team members in the providing care during these challenging times. The session will include patient and provider perspectives in sharing their safety concerns, as well as steps each can take to mitigate these risks. Finally, participants will have an opportunity for a live question and answer section with dental health professionals to address any additional matters. Participants will also have access to a compendium of HIV- and oral health-related resources.
