The Orange County Local Oral Health Program (LOHP) has invited Martha Dellapena, RDH, MEd, to speak during a virtual Lunch & Learn to offer an overview of what oral health literacy is and why it matters. Participants will learn practical tools and roadmaps for improving the health literacy of dental practices. The session is based on research conducted by Health Research for Action, a research center of UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health, in collaboration with the California Department of Public Health Office of Oral Health. All dental providers in California, including dental hygienists, dental assistants, and dentists, are eligible to attend this course and have the option of receiving 1.0 CDE credit upon completion. Please note that this webinar will not be recorded.

Participants will gain knowledge and competence in:
1. Identifying oral health literacy strengths and opportunities for improvement in a dental practice.
2. Using a practice assessment checklist in order to implement phased changes.
3. Improvement strategies for communicating clearly and empowering patients.
4. Understanding the use of an action plan that helps set health literacy goals that are actionable.
