Tobacco products, the tobacco industry, and patterns of tobacco use in the United States are expanding and transforming rapidly. Dental professionals must understand the health effects of both conventional and emerging products, which all have important implications for oral health, dental treatment, and overall health and wellbeing. Dental team members are highly motivated to address tobacco use but all too often fall short of connecting patients with needed cessation assistance. This presentation examines how to overcome barriers to providing effective cessation help in dental practice through brief, simple, and evidence-based strategies.

Learning objectives:

Recognize current trends in the use, marketing, and regulation of emerging tobacco and nicotine products
Understand the oral and overall health implications of using e-cigarettes, cannabis, and other tobacco
Identify in-office strategies to address patient tobacco use, including communication, referrals, pharmacological aids, and other forms of assistance
Intended Audience:
This course is designed for general dentists, dental specialists, and the entire dental team.

Instructors:

Benjamin Chaffee, DDS, MPH, PhD
