This presentation shares findings from the MOOD study, which co-created the theory-driven Restart Smiling oral hygiene intervention for delivery during SMI physical health checks and follow-up care. Its training package is cited in NHS England guidance. It also presents RESTART, a priority setting partnership that followed the James Lind Alliance methods and identified the top 10 national research priorities for oral health and dental care in people with severe mental ill-health.

The 100 Million Mouths Campaign strengthens oral health education in US primary care training. State Champions receive workshops, mentoring and technical assistance, then work with multidisciplinary programmes to embed oral health in curricula. From 2021-2025, 30 Champions engaged over 160 programmes and 14,000 learners. South Dakota demonstrates how local leadership can turn national goals into sustainable, scalable interdisciplinary education, including within psychiatry residency programmes.
Mind, Mouth, and Models of Care: International Lessons for Closing the Oral Health Equity Gap in Severe Mental Illness Dr Ava Carter
Dr Carter will examine international care models addressing oral health inequalities among people with SMI, who face high levels of untreated disease, tooth loss, dental anxiety, financial hardship, medication-related xerostomia and fragmented services. Examples include psychiatric dental clinics, co-located community services and interdisciplinary referral pathways. The presentation will highlight effective service designs, trauma-informed care and practical policy recommendations for local implementation.
